Dao (道, the Way) in the Dao De Jing: Meaning and Occurrences
In the Dao De Jing, Dao (道) is the Way: the nameless source that comes before heaven and earth and gives birth to the myriad things, and the model that heaven and the sage follow.
道 (dào) is the first word of the book's title and its most frequent key term. In ordinary Chinese it means a road, and also "to say"; the Dao De Jing uses it for what comes before everything else, translated here as "the Way". This page counts only that sense, so the verb in the middle of the opening line, 道可道, is left out.
Chapter 1 says that the way that can be followed is not the eternal Way. In chapter 25 the speaker does not know its name, calls it 道, and when forced to name it, calls it "great". Chapter 42 gives an order of birth: the Way gives birth to one, one to two, two to three, and three to the myriad things.
The Way is also a model. Chapter 25 ends with a chain: people are ruled by earth, earth by heaven, heaven by the Way, and the Way by what is so of itself (自然). The phrase "the Way of heaven" (天之道, 天道) returns in chapters 9, 47, 73, 77, 79 and 81, and chapter 77 sets it against the way of people.
