The characters of the Dao De Jing, by HSK level
The Dao De Jing is 5,281 characters long but uses only 801 different ones, and most of them are common. 89% of the text is made of characters from HSK levels 1 to 6, and 68% from levels 1 to 3 alone. Only 90 characters are beyond HSK 9, and 60 of those occur once. Tap any character on this page to see what it means in the book.
By HSK level
HSK 3.0, the 2021 standard for learners of Chinese, puts 3,000 characters in nine levels: 300 at each of levels 1 to 6 and 1,200 in levels 7 to 9. Counted against it, every character of the book:
| Level | Different characters | Occurrences | Share of the text | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 130 | 1,625 | 31% | 31% |
| HSK 2 | 116 | 1,345 | 25% | 56% |
| HSK 3 | 110 | 605 | 11% | 68% |
| HSK 4 | 87 | 714 | 14% | 81% |
| HSK 5 | 53 | 187 | 4% | 85% |
| HSK 6 | 63 | 217 | 4% | 89% |
| HSK 7-9 | 152 | 386 | 7% | 96% |
| Beyond HSK | 90 | 202 | 4% | 100% |
What makes the text hard is less its rare characters than its common ones used in their classical sense. 之 is “it” or “of” here, far more often than anything a textbook teaches; 其, 者, 以 and 而 carry the grammar. The grammar words take them one at a time, with every example from the book.
The 100 most frequent characters

Beyond HSK
The characters beyond HSK 9 are mostly classical words that modern Chinese no longer uses: 兮, a sung exclamation; 吾, “I”; 孰, “who”; 焉 and 哉, closing particles. The rest are names of old things, such as 刍狗, the straw dogs of chapter 5. The number after each character is how often it occurs.

How this is counted
Han characters only, punctuation left out, in the Wang Bi text this site uses, as recited. HSK levels are those of the official 2021 lists (GF 0025-2021). The site computes these tables from the text itself, so they follow every correction to it. To read the chapters in an order made for learners, see the study path.
